"Silence!" the man screams. "Take it like a man, private." Dean has been sentenced to 100 lashes. The first lashes strike Dean's chest and stomach, then his back, then his ass. Dean's scourging was pure hell, but it was over in an hour. Now, bound to a wooden cross, he shakes in fear, knowing he is about to endure six hours of unending torture. Six hours! As the winch lifts the cross, he feels the weight on his arms and legs. Within minutes he is in pain as his muscles try to cope with 175 pounds pulling on each arm. As Dean enters his second hour on the cross, every muscle in his lean body screams in agony. His attempts to find a less stressful position are futile. The worst agony comes when his legs give out and each arm and shoulder must bare his full body weight, so he must shift his weight back to his legs. Yesterday, Private Johnson was removed from his cross. Now, 24-hours later, he can barely walk but is ordered to report to the punishment room. "Assume the position!" the man barks. He sees the horsewhip, a single, braided length of leather that he knows will rip into his body. The pain is almost unbearable, but Dean takes it like a man. "Fuck you, sir!" he blurts out.
